MOONEYES July Xmas Show Pt1

Jeff risked his pale white neck getting 2nd degree sunburns in this LA heatwave last weekend just to bring us miserably cold bastards some coverage of what looks like one of the best rod and custom  shows to attend… MOONEYES 2010 – it looked just killer. Here are a sampling of the hundreds of shots taken.

Theres more where that came from, we’ll put up a stack more in the next few days once you get you head around these shots.

And back to you LA

Jeff, our guy with a camera in LA, has been working over time this weekend with 2 shows of shots to sift through and share with us all.

The first was the 17th Annual Glendale Cruise Night Car Show and Street Party. It was crammed with all kinds of rides and all kinds of people. Here’s a slice of the action. – its worth looking closely at some of the rad shit in the backgrounds too…

Thousands of people with one idea, one dream…

Grab a beer, get comfortable and put you feet up for about 30 min to watch this original 1959 official National Hot Rod Association 1/4mile racing full length video below. It’s gold and well worth taking the time out to watch. (hit the full screen button)

Jones’ Dodge Charger

Our old mate Jones loves his Mopars. He has a real nice Val coupe that he has owned for at least 10 years which I can’t exactly remember which model it is. The Dodge Charger is a dream car for young man like Jones… Not the usual car that we post on Committed Few but this is nearly complete and we are stoked for ya!…. I hope you still have some dreams to aspire to?  440 stroked out to 512cu, 750 holley,  aluminium heads, big cam, got a chrysler A-833 “4 on the floor” and Willwood discs all round. Whhooo wee…

Icons of Speed and Style

We’ve been saving this post for a rainy day. RM Auctions are the big time in car auctions with thousands of cars most people only get to dream about passing under the hammer each year. I recall seeing  an ad in a past issue of Rodders Journal for the “Icons of Speed and Style” auction showing a sweet candy red and gold T-Bird, the little red wagon drag car/truck and some prototype/ show cars from back in the day which really peaked my interest. It turns out this was an auction of a sample of a single guys private collection… It’s like a dream custom/rod garage on crack, just think if this is what the guy let go across the block what has he still got as his best of the best?!

It’s cool to see what these things went for in the states (esp. stepping towards the end of the recession in sept 2009), the classic solid customs and prototypes hit high cash and the shit like Boyd Coddington crap just made 1/2 the expected result, overall I’d suggest they were probably a very strong investment for the guy compared to say having his cash in the housing market in the US…

There are some absolute show stoppers among the line up of 80 cars, below is a sample of a few random things as an intro before you click the link and delve deep into the full auction rundown of the rest…

The 1958 Ford Thunderbird Custom Hardtop (Larry Watson) was estimated at $70- 90,000us but went for $55,000 – we love this ride, it was such a perfect custom for the time and still is.

1965 Dodge A100 Pickup Truck “Little Red Wagon” Estimate of $200,000 – $300,00, went for $550,000US

I still can’t believe that this 1951 Chevrolet “La Jolla” Custom Coupe (Harry Bradley) went for $24,750US at auction when the estimate was $80,000 – $120,000US – mint ride for the cash!

So you can see it was sort of all over the place on some cars for the cash, but at the end of the day we’re sure thats not the point at all if your collecting on this level – this is an extrodanary line up and there are alot more for you to dream about and imagine what you could have sold to make it fit in your garage here: RM Icons of Speed and style auction list and results

The site is worth a solid browse when you get a chance, the archive of auctions back through the years is great and they have a stack of info about most cars listed.
