The 2011 Nostalgia Drags were held the other weekend. Kenny from the Carnales sent these shots to us. An awesome day at the drags! Check the Bay Rodders for more info
Justin’s Model A Coupe is a 100% bad arse Hot Rod. Justin and his family are no strangers to proper home built hot rods being patched ‘Scavengers’, a filthy few of hotrod building, car part scavenging vultures. The A body was a gift for his 16th birthday which started as a Sport Coupe found on a farm in Belfast. It may have taken a long time to get the project officially started (except for the collection of parts over time) the complete build only took 10 weeks and another month to get certification. Yes this Model A is road legal in NZ and factory right hand drive.
This isn’t the first worthy car that Justin has run around in. One of the baddest cars I’ve ever seen to roll around Christchurch was his old tail dragging two tone green ‘59 Ford Galaxy Coupe.
What I love about this hot rod is that it is functional. It looks clean being British racing green, but it isn’t high dollar and babied. Justin has a lot of fun in it, whether he be burning over the winding roads to Akaroa, drifting it on the dirt track or peeling it out on the pad. It was built for fun and fun it is. Justin took me for a burn and man I had such a huge grin. The noise of the 350 with headers and straight pipes, turning right onto the country road giving it some gas and the screeching of the 8.20 X 15 BFG’s, hearing the V8 revving out and changing down with the B&M ratchet shifter just makes you feel cool. The 350 horse cam gives some great performance along with the Edelbrock six carb manifold with six Ford 94’carbs. The intake manifold has some racing history being used in the 1950’s originally by a joker by the name of Neil Stuart in his single seater race car. In the 1970’s it was used in a hydroplane until about 8 years ago when the Orpwoods got their mitts on it. The 4 bolt 350 Chev uses Fuely heads and is mated up with a Turbo 350 trans and Pontiac diff. Slowing down is done with Zephr disc brakes.
The body sits right with the Model A chassis kicked down in the front 5 inches and kicked up 16 inches in the rear. The body has been channelled 4 inches and a ’37 Ford roof that was found lying around one of the family paddocks and was used to give this coupe a unique roof line.
A cool car for sure and a big thanks for having me out there and talk some shit and get some pictures! Such a great family environment.
We look forward to seeing more of Justin and his family’s builds in the future.
The Beach Hop this year appeared to be pretty rainy. I was taking some pictures of Justin & Harry Orpwoods green Model A in the heat of dry Canterbury that weekend that we will be posting soon. Lucky for us Kenny from the Carnales attended with the some of the other boys from his club. Kenny sent me through a couple of pics below. The Galpin Gasser II I beleive has come from California?..I read about the original Galpin Gasser 56 Ford in a recent traditional Rod & Custom.
