Our mate Jeff has moved from Southern Cali and up to Portland Oregon and is now a fortunate owner of a 60 Impala Coupe. Jeff found these shots of the Chevy assembly line from LIFE from ’59. My favourite image is the baremetal body. The compesition, the dark with the light, the workers welding and the shine on the unpainted steel. This is an Impala body in its most finest stage of its life. Sounds like i’m talking about an Elle Macpherson calender but don’t these simple shots of what was once just a normal day at work make you dream in the present day. Do you think the employees would get a staff discount? Or have the ability to pay off a vehicle via some pay cheque plan? I guess back then you were always wanting the new model where as now you can pick your favourite to try and obtain? Do you think if the robots of today had a mortal brain would wish they were human hand welding 1/4 panels on these beautiful cars instead of stamping out the now sorry front wheel drive Impalas? mmmm so fine from ’59………..

You may have seen this ’54 for sale on trademe some time ago? We did and Craig from Christchurch did the deal and has taken on the project. Craig is Committed thats for sure! He’s been working six days a week fabing up support structures to help stabilise damaged buildings in our broken city and on Sundays he has been doing the fine work you can see below. We are fans of four door NZ new and this right hand drive ’54 will be powered by a freshly built 350 and 400 trans. Craig is one of us. The younger generation building a car the right way! CF style for sure! Another cool as fuck car in the making that we can’t wait to see rolling. Thanks for sharing your pics with us Craig for the wider CF community to see. Keep the updates coming.
I was clearing through some crap and found this old photo of the Impala from about ’98 ’99 at the Rangiora
Muscle Car Madness. I was about 18 (shit i’m getting on) and the car isnt really that loco….and way too high. Its funny how back then Muscle Car Madness actually suited the name. That was what it was about, Holden Torana’s with blowers and bug catchers, Mustangs, and the only Impalas sported fat tyres, people just didnt get that skinny’s were cool….
Got these pics through from Isaac, he’s on the right track thats for sure! Keep us posted…. look out for the Black Plate Lurkers Invers Chapter. Get those project pics in.
Hey Jimmy,
Been working on my 61 a bit lately. Heard you were after a few pics of winter projects. Just finished making all the patch panels for the rear guard tonight. The left rear guard was all cut out and I had nothing to copy off to make a new one. So I had to copy the other side. Turned out pretty mint. Had to make new inner and outer. Used a bit of 12×12 square bar for the edge so can fit a wheel in there without it rubbing. Got the disk brake kit on the front just got to plumb it up and fit the caliper. Then its just a wee bit of rust in a couple of the doors, finish welding the rear floor pan in, a lot of sanding and a bit of paint. Final paints a high gloss silver metal flake roof with a suede copper body.
Took the Harley primary to bits to fix the kicker because it was slipping.
Cheers
Isaac
Check this out, even if you think you know it all you’ll still learn something….its pretty cheesy with some bad computer graphics but stick with it and before you know it you’ve spent half an hour and watched all 11 episodes. Watch up to episode 5 or 6 at least. Some real sweet history with Ron Aguirre and Bill Hines, going through when aircraft hydraulic parts were used and ran out and purpose built lowrider parts were manufactured right up to hopping in the 90′s.
